The genus Tolumnia was split from Oncidium, taking with it all species that have equitant leaves. It has no pseudobulbs and likes a humid environment. The roots need excelent drainage and the plant is best grown mounted on a raft.

This species grows a lot of aerial roots, with only a few sticking to the raft. It also has very long rhizomes between tufts of leaves. In cultivation, it produces a mass of roots and tufts of leaves.
