Sunflower
Family Asteraceae
Name Helianthus annus
Common Name Sunflower

 Pictures

The sunflower, a favourite of kid's gardens, is quick and easy to grow. Numerous cultivars exist and it is now possible to get multi-flowering dwarf plants that can even be grown in containers. The large seeds are edible and have a nutty flavour.

Germination

Depth: ½ cm
When: Spring
Where: 2 seeds to a container, for transplant later.
It is said that heating the seeds for 10 seconds in the microwave oven aids germination.

Culture

Grow sunflowers in moist, fertile, well drained soils. Plant the seedlings in a block rather than a line as that will enable the plants to hold each other up. In very exposed situations, the plants may need staking.
