Bottle gourd

This easy to grow, versatile vine has been grown since prehistoric times. It produces round gourds with long necks. Sometimes the neck is swollen, giving the gourds the unusual shape. Young gourds soft skinned, but this soons hardens and thickens, and when dried, the skin is like wood.

Young gourds are edible, and dried ones have been used to make water bottles (and hence the name) and other kitchen utensils, such as bowls and spoons. Various cultures and arts and craft people carve the gourd. Sprawling vines produce gourds with curved necks, and climbing ones produce gourds with straight necks.

Pohutukawa

Pohutukawa, the New Zealand Christmas tree, is an icon of coastal areas in Northern New Zealand. During Christmas, the tree is covered in masses of red flowers. The colour of the flowers are made up of masses of red stamens, petals are non-existent. There is a "cup" in the middle of the flower with nectar that attracts the pollinators.

There is some local variations in the colour of the flowers. The main colour is red, but there are plants with scarlet, pink and yellow flowers.

Pohutokawa normally grows along the coast on steep cliff and inaccessible rock faces, although it will also grow outside these areas. It is usually multi trunked, with windswept trees having twisted and gnarled trunks. Pohutukawa forests have mainly been cleared and Rangitoto Island is the only remaining pohutukawa forest left in New Zealand. On Rangitoto, Pohutukawa hybridises naturally with the northern Rata.

Spaghetti Melon

Spaghetti melon (Cucurbita pepo) belongs in the cucurbit family (along with cucumber, pumpkin, etc), and grows in a similar fashion. The 'spaghetti' is actually the flesh of the melon. Usually grown as a winter melon. This is the speckled skin variety that produces a lot of white 'spaghetti' (see picture).

The two plants in my garden produce enough melons to last one year! Hardier than pumpkin. The 'spaghetti' is low in calories, high in fibre, contains no fat and is an excellent source folic acid. Also has some potassium, and a little iron, vitamin A and vitamin C.
