Common Name New Zealand Gloxinia
Etymology
Rhabdothamnus From Greek rhabdos meaning rod, and Greek thamnos meaning bush.
solandri Named after Daniel Solander, 18th century Swedish explorer and botanist who accompanied Joseph Banks on the Captain Cook's first voyage.

This is the only species of gesneriad native to New Zealand. It is found in the North Island, growing amongst rocks and sheer cliffs. The orange flowers add welcome colour to the undergrowth.
