Kiwifruit

Female Flower
Family Actinidiaceae
Name Actinidia deliciosa
Common Names Kiwifruit, Chinese Gooseberry

  See also:  Food plants, Climbers

Kiwifruit was introduced from China at the turn of the 20th century. Initially it was named, "Chinese gooseberry", on account of its flavour, but was then renamed to "Kiwifruit" to better identify it with New Zealand. The fruit grows on a vine. Male and female flowers appear on different vines, and as they lack nectar, commercial orchards employ specialist apiarist for bee pollination.
