This member of the Amaryllidaceae family comes from the winter rainfall areas of South Africa. The main growing season is in the winter, and if grown in New Zealand, this corresponds with the wet season, so there is often no need to water the plant. As the summer approaches, the leaves dry up leaving behind a large clump of large bulbs. In the autumn, each bulb produces an inflorescence with bright red or white/green bracts that open up to reveal multiple stamens with bright yellow pollen.
