Flowering This Month

24 August 2011

July and August had been unusual. Despite the two "polar blasts", the weather in between is more like spring. Today, the high is in the late teens and the low last night was around 8 degrees. Read what the NZ Herald are saying, Spring Returns After Icy Interlude.

Despite the weather, Aloe vera flowers on cue this year.

And so does the jewel orchid (Ludisia discolor). Unlike most orchids, this one grows on the forest floor, where is is dark and humid. It is mainly grown for its foliage.

Christmas Cactus (Schlumbergera ×buckleyi)

There was a late flush of flowers from the Christmas cacti, but nothing out of the ordinary.
