Belamcanda is related to Iris. In the Spring, it bears clusters of spotted orange flowers on thin stems. This is followed by obvoid green fruits that split in the autumn to reveal shiny black seeds, the size of ball bearings. The leaves look like those of bearded iris.

The Chinese have for centuries used the leaves and roots of Belamcanda as a medicine for the relief of several ailments.
